The Woodwise White Oak Test Kit is a quick chemical test that tells you whether a floor is white oak. It is the easy way to settle the red oak or white oak question before a repair, a lace-in or a board replacement, when the new wood has to match what is already down.
How it works
- A two-part test (Part A and Part B) used on wood shavings from the floor.
- The shavings change color if white oak is present.
- Full directions come in the kit.
Getting a reliable result
- Test bare, clean wood shavings only. Do not apply the liquids to the floor itself; they will discolor the board.
- Do not take shavings from knots, mineral streaks or badly discolored areas.
- Run the test first on shavings you know are white oak and red oak, so you have a reference.
- Below 50°F, warm the liquids first by standing the bottles in warm water.
- If a result is doubtful, test shavings from another board.
What it does not tell you
A negative result means the wood is not white oak. It does not prove the wood is red oak, because it could be another species. The kit does not identify grade or natural color.
Safety
The test liquids are toxic if swallowed, and Part A contains sodium nitrite. Wash your hands after use and keep the kit away from children, direct heat and combustible material.
